Early Intervention ModelEarly Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI) based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the single most research-supported treatment approach for Autism Spectrum Disorder (e.g., National Autism Center Standards Report 2009/2015) and is considered the “gold standard” autism treatment (U.S. Surgeon General, 1999). Characteristics of effective EIBI/ABA programs include high treatment intensity (e.g., 25-40 hrs per week of 1:1 therapy by Behavior Interventionists), regular supervision by a qualified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), and a comprehensive developmental curriculum targeting all developmental domains simultaneously (e.g., language/communication, social, motor, play, academic, adaptive daily living skills, problem behaviours, etc.). The recommended model for EIBI/ABA therapy is home-based sessions where the family employs several BIs to deliver 1:1 intervention programs, supervised by a BCBA. |
Setting up your child's team...I am happy to help parents find and interview potential Behaviour Interventionists (BIs). BIs need to be 19+, and enjoy being with/working with kids. If they don't have experience working with children with autism, that's ok! I will provide training and supervision to ensure program implementation fidelity. The most important characteristics for a BI are that they: have rapport with your child and your family, are keen to learn, and are willing to take corrective/constructive feedback. Interdisciplinary CollaborationI am happy to collaborate with other professionals on your child's team such as a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) and/or an Occupational Therapist (OT) in order to provide comprehensive, evidence-based interventions for your child's early intervention program. |
